Tally ho, 2012!

Well we are three days into the new year and I can tell it's gonna be a doosey. In two days I'm having shoulder surgery so get ready for more posts while I'm stuck in bed with nothing to do and enough painkillers to make for some interesting literature. This isn't going to be a long post, I'm just stopping by to update you on a couple of things that have happened over the last couple of weeks.

1). I got my acceptance letter from my first choice school! YAY!!! I'm waiting with breath that is bated for scholarship information and for the news of whether or not I made it into the fairly competitive Voice Performance program at this school. It's a Catholic university run by Benedictine nuns. It is technically all-girls, but the sibling school for the guys(a seminary run by monks) is only three miles away and most of the classes are co-educational, thus offering all perks or a coed school, but with all the chaperons and single sex dorms of an all-girls school.

1.5). I get to visit this school in April because they help accepted student with travel costs, which is the only way I could have afforded to visit.

2). For the first time ever, I have made a New Year's resolution that seems fairly doable. I have decided to start writing letters to my future spouse. Since I am still in the discernment process and am not allowed un-chaperoned contact with members of the opposite sex (so basically, no dating of any kind) I decided that instead of devoting time to boys I can't date anyways I would start a one sided dialogue with the one who is getting stuck with me. That way if I do take the veil and enter a convent I will be able to do so knowing I never unintentionally or otherwise lead a guy to believe I was able to be in a relationship when I wasn't. And if I don't, the poor sucker who marries me will have proof that no matter how bossy and sarcastic I get, my main goal is to make him happy and see his soul and those of our children make it to heaven.

3). I really hope that what I am about to say isn't a surprise considering the title of my blog, but you never know. CHRISTMAS!!!!! The Christmas season is upon us and with a few more days till Epiphany I am savoring every second. I went to Midnight Mass at a local parish (not the one I belong to, but the one I usually go to) and it was beautiful. They have a real choir, that knows how to do Gregorian chant and at N.O. parish no less!!! If it weren't for the fact that I teach a Sunday school class at my current parish I would switch in a second so I could audition to sing with them.

Well anyways that's the update. Like I said, with my surgery I'm going to have lots of spare time to post so hopefully there shall be more to come. Oh, and before I forget...

I'm not dead, I promise!

Wow, I had no idea it had been so long since I posted! I wish I could say that I will be getting back into the swing of things and start posting again, but as this is senior year I just can't guarantee that. With colleges to visit, tests to take, auditions to prepare for, job to keep so college can be paid for, and of course, homeschooling stuff that needs to be done so I can graduate. I doubt I will be on this much. I'll try to post when the big stuff happens and I'm hoping to have time to post some of the details after I visit my first choice school. It should be up withing the next few weeks.(It would come sooner, but I kinda forgot I had 3 papers due on friday and so they are taking up all my time)

Hey, so this isn't going to be a long post just a recap of what has happened since I last blogged. My only sister who shall be called LEO here had nephew #2 on Monday June 21st at 6:45 am. He is named Blaise Dominic and his big bro Matthias(who just turned 2 in May)is completely besotted with him. Blaise was welcomed into the Church on Sunday June 27th in a beautiful ceremony done entirely in Latin. I was unfortunately away when Blaise was born because of music camp, but I got home on Friday so I have had plenty of time to gush over him and tell my sis about all the random people at camp I showed his pictures off to. Until new time...

Oops

So, I mighta-sorta-kinda forgot that I had the blog. Oops? Sorry for any of you who are out there waiting for updates more than once every 2 months, but it seems that it is not in my nature to remember things. Well, since I last blogged I've had knee surgery, enrolled in my first college course(sociology!)and gone on a TEC(Teens Encounter Christ)retreat. So lots of fun stuff that kept me from updating. I'm hoping to be back to blogging at least on a monthly basis soon, but with classes, recovering from the surgery and the music camp I'm of to in 4 weeks I'm not sure when I will be back.

True Manhood

I know it's been awhile since I last posted so for those of you out there who read this I apologize, but I will most likely be getting back into the swing of writing soon so more posts will come.

Now, the reason I am writing today is because of a brilliant post I found over on CMR. This post is about the death of masculinity and please, please send it on after you read it. Anyways, it got me thinking about what it's going to be like when I'm older and out in the real world trying to date as a Catholic because all of the things mentioned in the post about "emasculated ninnies" and "testosterone infused sacks of passions" are very true. And while having those as my main two choices will make it extremely easy to stay chaste, it really does sadden me to think that that's what will be waiting for me when I leave home. Granted, I can't talk about men being men without bringing up the problem of women trying to be men, because that has been one of the things that got us into this mess in the first place. Now I've always been a tomboy and I most likely always will be, but for all that I could climb trees and arm wrestle with the best of them I always understood that as a girl was fundamentally different. I fear that the mindset I had growing up is not shared even by females who were quite the girly girl.

There has been a crusade in recent years for the gender equality(which is a good thing)to be taken a few steps farther to what is known as gender sameness(which is one massive failure in the making)and that poses a bit of a problem. Because there are basic things about a man and a woman that will never be the same. I will use my dear friend Caleb as an example. I have ovaries, a uterus and fallopian tubes and he never will. That doesn't mean there is something wrong with him or me that's just the way it is. Now on the flip side, he has both the X chromosome and the Y chromosome while I only have X. Again, that doesn't mean there is something wrong with either one of us it simply means that he is a young man and I am a young woman. The problem with gender sameness is that it wants to be blind to thing like that where it needs to be accepting. For example it is perfectly exceptable for me to be turned down for a job that has large amounts of manual labor involved because of my bad knee since it would create a liability to the company, but if I was to be turned down because I am very petite woman who has little upper body strength I could sue them simply because they rationally decided I was a bad fit for the job. It just doesn't make any logical sense! There will never be a sameness between the two genders because we a fundamentally different. That's all for today...

Welcome to 2010! I know 2009 was rough, but we can only pray that things get better this year. Now on with post…

As I was sipping(still am sipping, I suppose)my irish cream drink that I was having to toast in the new year(my family is Irish-American, if there is a loophole in drinking laws we will know of it and exploit it)I began to ponder the torturous task of making a new years resolution I pondered what the progressives would do. Would they vow to become even more politically correct? or would they swear to eat every type of dead animal product except fish on fridays? or would they simply decide to be even more annoying? And as I pondered these things I found my resolution. My new years resolution is to never leave mass right after communion, no matter how late I am for what I have going on after it. I decided on this because at the mass I went to today I noticed an alarming number of people leaving straight after communion(and this wasn’t the mass you go to over your lunch break, it was at 4 and in my town that only requires leaving work 5 minutes early to make it to)and I couldn’t understand why they were doing it. So, with that in mind I hope some of you readers out there(if I have any)will join me in this vow! Have a very happy New Year and god bless you all!

Is Instant Gratification Really A Wonderland?

Soooooooooooo, you know that promise I made about updating...Well, I broke it. Sorry. I got busy with school and getting stuff ready for Christmas and kinda forgot. But I’m here now! And my topic today is…

The mini series Alice on SyFy.
It showed last Sunday and Monday night and it was brilliant. My all time favorite character from Alice in Wonderland is the Mad Hatter and Andrew Lee Pots was brilliant. However that’s not what I’m here to talk about. I am here to talk about one line from it said by the King of Hearts, “If our people don't feel what they want to feel when they want to feel it - well the whole system breaks down! Instant gratification, it's a very complex business.”. That line is a great metaphor for today’s society. Now a days if we can’t have everything exactly the way we want it right now instead of accepting it and working towards the goal we breakdown. For example if I don’t want a baby I can use contraception and if I still get pregnant I can go and get an abortion. Instead of doing what is best for the wider world and for my long term needs(remember all you liberals out there, that baby will grow up to pay taxes!)I do what suits my needs now ignoring the all the things that it will effect. The same is true of sex, because of the afore mentioned contraception I can have lots of casual sex without the normal result of pregnancy. And since as society teaches that there are no emotional side effects of casual sex(even though science has proven there is)why should I not sleep with every man I can get my hands on? The same principles are true of smoking, drugs, and a host of other things, but because we serve only our own needs we ignore the scientific proof and the testimony of others and do it anyways. Our inability to serve anyone but ourselves will be our downfall. So I leave you with this question, “Do I really feel better when I serve only myself?”. Those are just the ones I know of and I invite all you readers to post the links to more in the comments. The one thing all these blogs have in common is one thing: Orthodoxy. I have seen so many “Catholic” blogs that pick and choose the bits of the church the blogger likes and pretend every thing else is a myth and not canon law. And it pisses me off...ROYALLY. Anyone who has ever had the pleasure(read:horrible unhappyness)to be around a ginger when one of us is ticked will know that we are dangerous and should be hidden from and the touchy-feely, go with the flow Catholics that are working against the Church will most definitely feel my anger. Every piece of teaching in the church is there for a reason and just because it is politically correct to oppose teaching doesn't mean you should. The danger to ones soul should be more worrying, than the danger to ones reputation. So I am going to lay out the basics so that all the pick-and-choosers can understand them.
-No sex before Marriage. Period. If you are doing it STOP and go to confession and if you aren't, but are thinking about it talk to your priest and pray before you give away something that can never be returned.
-No Abortion. It's murder and if you don't think that ripping an unborn child from it's mother's womb is anything but murder you need to talk to your priest and reevaluate your feelings on the matter.
-No Gay Marriage. People with homosexual tendencies are under intense presure and deserve all of our love and support. However, that doesn't mean they should be encouraged to commit sin. That's not helping them at all.
-No Going to Mass Once a Month. For the love of everything on this green earth, how disrespectfull do you have to be to not even give God an hour once a week? I'm a TEENAGER and I manage to make it to Mass on Sunday and as often as possible during the week! I understand if you are sick or disabled and can't make it. My mother suffers from chronic pain and there have been times in the past where I have missed because she was in to much pain to move and I couldn't find a ride. It happens to the best of us and thanks to EWTN we have at least been able to watch the Mass. It's skipping because you are to tired, or hungover, or just because you don't feel like it that I have a problem with. My older sister gave birth and nearly hemorrhaged to death later that day and as exhausted and blood-lacking as she still was come Sunday morning she and her husband got my newborn nephew all dressed up and they went to Mass. There is no excuse to skip Mass for something trivial, when they made it with all that standing in their way.

Wow...I didn't expect that to turn into a rant. Well anyways...I will try to post by Sunday and until then have a Merry, Merry, Advent!

NCYC

I returned from NCYC(National Catholic Youth Conference)a couple of days ago. It was hosted by the Dioceses of Kansas City St. Joseph and Kansas City Kansas(my home diocese)and it was the most amazing thing I have ever been to. We had adoration in the Sprint Center on friday morning and even with the concrete floors and my bum knee I couldn't help but fall upon my knees at the beauty of the Eucharist and the power of being surrounded by 18,000 people who were just as much in awe of it as I was. Saturday night we had Mass and once again due to being from one of the hosting diocese my youth group got to be in the sprint center and I had the same feeling of awe at the sheer size of the group gathered together. The mass was celebrated by Cardinal DiNardo, Archbishop Nauman, Bishop Finn and about 20 other bishops from dioceses around the country and 300 priests including the one from my parish Fr. Hullinger and it was amazing. The breakout sessions were awesome as well and other than the mass and adoration I think the highlight of the conference for me was the "Romance without Regret" session with Jason and Crystalina Evert who took Pope John Paul II's teaching about sexuality "Theology of the Body" and made a version more directed towards teens. The session lasted for about 2 hours and in that time I learned so much about chastity and love that my mind was blown by the end of it. If you ever have the chance to hear them speak I would definitely recommend it. That is my little piece about NCYC and I will try to post more within the week.
